UGC NET 2017 Exam Eligibility Criteria and Exam Pattern

Full form of UGC NET is university grants commission National Eligibility test. UGC NET Exam is one of the difficult exams in India. It is conducted by the university grants commission for the admission of candidates for lecturer ship and junior research fellowship award (JRF).

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is conducting NET exam on the behalf of UGC. Candidates who will qualify the UGC NET Exam 2017, can apply for the Lecturer ship and JRF award in national universities and institutes.


What is the UGC NET 2017 exam eligibility?


UGC has released some guideline regarding UGC NET 2017 exam eligibility, Candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria can apply for the NET exam. We discussed NET eligibility criteria of age limit and educational qualification in detail as given below:


Age Limit for UGC NET 2017 Exam


  • Age Limit for Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor or lecturer ship.
  • Age Limit for Junior Research Fellowship: Candidates whose age is less than 28 years will be eligible for the JRF award.



Age Relaxation

For Assistant Professor:

  • candidates, who are awarded a Ph. D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SELT/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor.
  • The candidates who have passed the UGC/CSIR JRF examination prior to 1989 are also exempted from appearing in NET.

For Junior Research Fellowship

  • Age relaxation of 5 years will be given to candidates form OBC (Non- creamy layer) SC/ST/PWD and to women category candidates.

Educational Eligibility for UGC NET 2017 Exam


Aspirants applying for UGC NET 2017 exam, must check NET exam eligibility before filling application form. Educational qualification for NET exam are given below.


  • Candidates who have secured 55% marks for General category (50% Marks for reserved category like OBC- Non-creamy layer/ SC/ST/PWD and women) candidates in master’s degree or equivalent from the UGC recognized universities.
  • PhD holder’s candidates, whose master’s degree have been completed by 19th September 1991, shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks.
  • Candidates can apply only for the subject, they have done master’s degree or post-graduation with. If the subject of their post-graduation is not available, then you can apply for related subject.
  • Final year appeared or appearing candidates of master’s degree, are also eligible for the NET exam, however they must have to compete master’s degree with required marks at the time of admission.
  • Applicants are need not to send any certificate in support of their eligibility and printout of their application form to CBSE. However, the applicants should satisfy themselves about their eligibility for the exam.
  • If any candidates found ineligible by the UGC at any stage, their candidature will be cancelled.

UGC NET 2017 Exam Pattern


Official notification has been released for UGC NET 2017 exam. CBSE will conduct NET exam in July 2017. We have discussed above UGC NET 2017 exam eligibility but aspirants must be aware of the UGC NET exam pattern as well to avoid any confusion in the exam.

According to UGC NET exam pattern, it consists of three papers of multiple choice questions. Paper-I will be common for all the subjects while paper II and III will be subjected oriented. Time duration for all the papers will be as follow:

Paper-I


  • It consists questions related to General awareness, Mental ability and reasoning. This paper is to test the teaching and research capability of the candidates. 
  • There will be 60 questions to do within 75 min out of which 50 questions need to be attempted.
  •  Candidates need to obtain 40% marks or 40 marks (35% for reserved category) to clear this section.

Paper-II 


  • It will have subject related questions. It will consist 50 questions (all compulsory) to be attempt in 75 minutes of 100 marks. 
  • Candidates need to obtain 40% marks or 40 marks (35% for reserved category) to clear this section

Paper-III 


  • It comprises questions related to subjects which candidate selected. 75 questions of multiple choice will be given of 150 marks to be solved within 150 minutes each question will be of two marks.
  • Cut off marks for this section is 50% or 75 marks (60 marks for reserved category).
All three papers is compulsory to attempt for all the candidates. There will be no negative marking in any paper.

UGC NET exam will be in offline mode i.e. pen paper mode. Exam paper will be bilingual i.e. in English and Hindi language.
